Read

TextFlows bridge the gap between static text and dynamic video-type media. By presenting the material in small digestible chunks your brain is relieved of some of the work it normally has to do in understanding a piece of text. And by allowing an author to play with the timing, layout, and interaction of the words, new or hidden meaning can be exposed.

Start your TextFlows reading experience by selecting a Channel and browsing through the Flows on our main page. Clicking on a flow will open our Flow 'Player' and play the Flow using your full browser window. By using all the space available, normal distractions are eliminated and you can better engage with the text.

For an optimal reading experience use the fullscreen button ( in the toolbar at the bottom of the Player screen) to play the flow in full screen mode.

We all read at different speeds, and each read different texts at different speeds. The speed control allows you to control the Flows speed in approximate words per minute. You will no doubt find that you enjoy reading most Flowing text at a slower than normal rate because you are more fully engaged with the material. If you loose you place you can 'bedoop' back () or move back and forth through the flow using the progress bar.

Note that there are also keyboard controls which can optimize your reading experience. The space bar toggles play/pause. The forward and backward arrows increase or decrease playing speed and the up arrow 'bedoops' back in the flow. Due to the vagaries of Flash in various browsers you may need to first click on the speed control to get keyboard focus into the Player, note also that the keyboard is always disabled when Flash plays fullscreen.

Share
Flows can be embedded as a widget on other websites and blogs. The share tool () in the Player provides a url that can be used to link to the playing Flow and an embed code that can be used to embed the Flow Widget on your site. We also offer the ability, from within the Player, to email the Flow to friends or post it to various social networking and bookmarking sites.

We'd love for TextFlows to become a popular means of sharing and experiencing text across the Internet, so we encourage you to share Flows with others!

Compose

As can be seen from the selection of Flows on this site, TextFlows changes the interaction between author and reader. A new party, or action is now included, the act of 'Composing' the Flow. A Flow is more than the sum of its words, its also the pacing, motion and text effects. Whether you are interpreting a work by some other author or creating your own, the best way to get hooked on TextFlows and to get value from the technology is to create some flows of your own. Composing a Flow from an existing text will give you a new understanding and appreciation of the material. Composing an original work will make you appreciate how TextFlows loosens the ties between punctation and grammer, and meaning.

The conventions of text as we currently experience it have evolved over millennia, and particularly since the invention of the printing press, to assist in the interpretation of sequences of static printed words. TextFlows frees text from its historical burdens and enables it to take advantage of the power of motion and light inherent in todays active screen devices.

At TextTelevision we are working hard to create consumer-ready versions of our Flow creation tools, however we're not quite there yet. We are currently in a private beta. If you are interested in participating please contact us at beta[at]textflows.com

Teach

TextFlows are a great tool to help teachers to teach a text. From the basics of working through parsing sentence by sentence, where a Flow can help a student grasp how phrases break down and how they relate to each other, and where the motion and pace of a Flow encourage engagement and ploughing forward. To advanced students analysing a piece of literature where a Flow can help a student with interpretation and phrasing.
